DVR User Survey: Consumers Want More Control of Recorded Programs
DVR User Survey:
Consumers Want More Control of Recorded Programs

Our April 2006 survey of some of the newest members of our Explorer® eClub provided valuable insight into “The Connnected Life” of cable customers and revealed the role our new MCP-100™ DVR set-top with DVD recorder/player can play in helping you give consumers what they want.

Over 75% of the nearly 3,000 respondents said they had an Explorer DVR in their homes. In addition, they are living the connected life with these other devices at home:

Percentages of Explorer Homes with Various Consumer Electronics Devices

69% said they would be very interested in transferring programs currently on their DVR hard drive to permanent storage on a DVD.

Nearly 76% of the respondents indicated they would be interested in purchasing videos via the cable system from a movie/cable program library for download onto DVDs to create a personal video library.

What they said about….

  Scientific Atlanta’s DVR Set-Top with Built-in DVD Recorder/Player

With the MCP-100™, cable operators can launch the next wave of DVR set-top service. This new DVR set-top allows consumers to record and play their own DVDs, as well as watch commercially available DVDs.

Programs stored on the hard drive of this advanced, dual-tuner HD-DVR can be transferred to DVDs for viewing at home or on the go to create personal video libraries.

  Direct To Disc

Scientific Atlanta is taking its DVR with DVD product a step further with Direct To Disc. A concept demonstration at the recent The National Show showed how cable operators could one day enable subscribers to purchase content (videos, soundtracks, games, etc.) through an on-demand portal and record the content to disc through the DVR’s built-in DVD recorder for later playback. Cable operators will satisfy the “on demand” and “mobility” desires of their customers, and content owners will enjoy a new, secure distribution channel for popular and niche content.

Transferring content to DVDs

  • “Would love to be able to make DVDs from my DVR!”

  • “This type of user friendly, a la carte, storage option is key to keeping digitally savvy customers like myself happy.”

  • “I would love a way to get shows onto DVD from the DVR.”

Portability is a key

  • “I would love to pull the stuff I record off my DVR and be able to view it on my laptop on flights, etc.”

  • “I am very interested in being able to purchase movies via cable and burn them to DVD to watch later, again, in the car, on the plane, etc. This would be a fabulous feature to have

Creating a personal video library

  • “What you are talking about would revolutionize the industry.”

  • “If gas goes to $3 or more a gallon I won't drive to the video store and would love to download videos to DVD…”

  • “Would be very interested in buying movies for download - especially movies our children watch again and again.”

Downloads - Price and selection are important

  • “My interest in (downloading movies/programs to DVD) would depend on pricing/speed.”

  • “Depends on selection/price.”

And, of course, they still love their DVR

  • “How did we ever manage without the DVR? It has revolutionized our television-watching experience. Thank you!”

  • “My whole family enjoys the DVR! It is very user friendly, even my 10 year old son knows how to use it! It has truly made watching TV beyond enjoyable. We watch TV on our terms and now I can catch new shows and I am exposed to a broader range of programming. DVR is a great invention. I can't wait to see what’s next with the technology!”

  • “I can't imagine living without a DVR. To me, it's the best invention since color TV.”

  • “The set top box is great... even my spouse who never could figure how to get things recorded to our VCR can program the box with ease. Being able to record multiple programs at the same time is also great.”
